Two years old. Shortlisted for Best Use of Search – iGaming at the Global Search Awards. I read the email twice, then shouted it across the office at Steve and Steven before I’d actually confirmed it wasn’t spam.
Who we are, quickly, because you’re busy
Vega Gibraltar are a search and performance marketing agency built for iGaming and other regulated markets. Not “we also do that”, we’ve never trusted agencies who say they do everything, because in our experience that usually means they do nothing particularly well. Affiliate structures, jurisdictional landmines, the stuff that makes most agencies go quiet in the pitch, that’s just Tuesday for us. We picked a lane and got good in it, on purpose, and we’re not interested in being anything else.
Most agencies treat regulation as a wall. We treat it as the reason we win. We know the compliance frameworks properly, so we get sign off with compliance teams that most agencies can’t, because most don’t give compliance the right information to feel empowered to say yes. That’s how we’re able to build the hundreds of links we build every month in iGaming.
We call ourselves an anti-agency because we got tired of watching agencies sell 40 slides and call it a strategy. No account manager relay race between you and the person doing the actual work. Rankings and revenue is how we get marked, nothing else counts. Not how the QBR looked in Canva, not the size of the retainer, not how many buzzwords made it into the pitch deck. We’d rather be right than polished. Most days we manage both. Some days just the one, and we’ll tell you which.
The campaign, and why it actually mattered
Lottoland launched their UK Sportsbook in 2021. By early 2025 they were still getting steamrolled on organic search by Bet365, Sky Bet and William Hill, three brands with a decade of category authority and absolutely no interest in sharing. The actual question buried in the brief was blunter than the brief let on: does digital PR move sportsbook SEO, or is it an expensive way to feel warm and fuzzy about brand awareness. We don’t do campaigns we can’t answer that question for, so we took it on to find out.
Fighting them head-on for the big generic terms would’ve been a slow and expensive way to lose, and we don’t do slow, expensive ways to lose. So we went round the side. Six secondary sports verticals, F1, boxing, golf, football, NFL, UFC, picked because the demand was real and, to use the corporate term, they were low hanging fruit nobody else was bothering to prioritise in their SEO strategy. One credible expert per vertical, fired off against live news, every release built to the same template: expert quote, live hook, a specific Lottoland category URL, anchor text that actually did something. No template deviation, because deviation is how campaigns lose focus and budgets disappear into noise.
Guenther Steiner gave his first ever betting brand interview. One conversation, over 100 pieces of coverage, spread across four months of us squeezing every last drop out of it. George Groves took boxing. Sam Torrance took golf. Shaun Wright-Phillips took football. Dan Plumley, a leading finance expert, worked NFL and UFC reactively, whenever the news cycle gave us an opening. We even got the Steiner interview cut into broadcast segments that ran on beIN SPORTS, which is a better return than most agencies get out of a full afternoon in a studio.
Here’s the part we actually care about, the only part that was ever going to matter to us. 208 pieces of coverage against a target of 72. 168 backlinks at an average Domain Authority of 73. Sportsbook keyword rankings up 82%, from 508 to 924. “Boxing betting” went from page nine to page one. “Motorsport betting” climbed from page three to page one. Cost per coverage item, £404, under target. Every placement tied to a commercial category page, not a vanity coverage count somebody could screenshot for a slide. A performance test with a proper scoreboard, and we won it against operators with a lot more money than us. We’re not going to dress that up as anything other than what it is, a result.
What being shortlisted actually means
Tom Bogues, UK SEO Manager for Lottoland
“The best agencies to work with those who seamlessly become an extension of your in-house team. When problem’s asrise (as they inevitably will), they don’t come to you waiting for instruction, they arrive with the problem and a solution. The fact that Vega Gibraltar are able to do this, while delivering fantastic results is a testament to their great work and is the reason why I hope to continue our long-term partnership.“
What’s next
We’re staying hungry because comfortable is how good agencies quietly turn into forgettable ones, and forgettable doesn’t win awards or clients. We’re not going to tell you we’re the agency to watch, that’s not really our call to make, results are the only argument we’re interested in putting forward. If your current search partner is handing you decks instead of rankings, come and talk to us. We’re not hard to find, and we won’t waste your time pretending to be something we’re not.
